| Fred Hiatt would not want this week's newsletter to be about him. He would want me to tell you about Alexandra Petri's delightful takedown of the congressional Christmas-card-as-gun-catalogue development. Or Julio Ricardo Varela feeling not so pretty about the new "West Side Story." Or Lee Drutman and Yuval Levin's intriguing proposal to expand the House of Representatives. (Actually, he'd gently chide me for cheating because I'm only supposed to feature one.) But our week here in the Opinions section was about Fred, who died Monday at 66, so I'm going to focus on the man who has led the Opinions section for 20 years. He was as kind as he was smart, gentle in his demeanor and unyielding in his convictions. We are shattered by his loss. But we also worked hard to produce a section this week that Fred would be proud of — and that would honor his vision of what an opinions section should be, a way of looking at things you hadn't considered, proposals you might disagree with, or simply writing that charms. Much of our work this week, in words, in pictures and in a particularly wonderful podcast by James Hohmann in which you can hear Fred's voice, was focused on celebrating his life and his contributions to American journalism. Those of you who have come to know Fred a bit through these weekly emails may have a sense of what we — and Post readers — have lost. We cannot replace him, but we are committed to continuing to pursue his vision of what an opinions section can be, week after week, idea after idea. How to find strength when someone you love dies.
